A cake smash session still remains one of the most popular ways to celebrate your baby’s first birthday. I get asked many questions about cake smash sessions, so this blog will hopefully help answer some of those. I’ve also included a brilliant guide to cake smashes that includes my pricing.
A cake smash session is the perfect way to celebrate a first birthday! As a newborn & baby photographer, I have been lucky to meet many parents at their cake smash sessions, and all of them have so much fun. They create amazing memories right in my studio whilst I capture those memories in real-time. I truly believe that a cake smash session is the most fun and memorable way to mark this milestone.
First of all, a cake smash session is all about capturing your baby's unique personality and individuality. Every baby is different, and a cake smash session allows them to express themselves in their own way. Some babies will dive right into the cake and get completely covered in cake and buttercream, while others may take a more tentative approach. Whatever your baby's style, a cake smash session will capture their true essence.
Secondly, a cake smash session is a great opportunity to create lasting memories that you will treasure forever. The photos from a cake smash session will capture your baby's first taste of birthday cake, their reactions to it, and their excitement and joy as they explore the sweet treat in front of them. These photos will be a wonderful reminder of this special milestone in your baby's life for years to come.
Finally, a cake smash session is just plain fun! Watching your baby dive into a cake and get covered in buttercream is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. It's a lighthearted and playful way to celebrate your baby's first year of life and the joy they have brought into your family. Not to mention the fun in the bath afterwards, with bubbles and splashing too!
If you're considering a cake smash session for your baby's first birthday, here are a few tips to help make it a success:
Dress your baby in an outfit that you don't mind getting messy. A nappy cover or tutu is a great option. You are welcome to bring more than one outfit along to the session. Some parents choose to have their baby in just a nappy with a nappy cover, or in a first birthday outfit of their choice. Shoes may be worn, but again, they will get covered in cake!
Schedule the session for a time when your baby is well-rested and fed. A hungry or tired baby is less likely to be in the mood for cake! Most of my cake smash sessions take place in the afternoon, after baby is full and napped!
Bring a clean change of clothes for you and your baby, and make sure to have your usual supplies of water/sippy cup, nappies and wipes. Parents do get just as mucky, due to cuddles and being hands on at the side to stop them crawling away. It is also suggested to bring your baby's own bubble bath for the tub, so we use the one your baby's skin is most used to!
Finally, be prepared to have fun and enjoy the moment! It does not matter if your baby does not cooperate or eat the cake. We have plenty of fun exploring it, playing with toys and finding hidden favourite snacks for encouragement!
A cake smash session is a wonderful way to celebrate your baby's first birthday. It's a fun and memorable experience that will create lasting memories for you and your family. So go ahead and let your baby dive into that cake – you won't regret it!
